Yield to Pedestrians- Georgia State Law

by Eric Jackson on August 29, 2009

Many people are in such a big hurry, that they don’t realize that pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks.

I routinely cross the streets at crosswalks at Valdosta State University, especially the one on Brookwood Drive in front of the Fine Arts Building. Almost every time I cross, at least one car zooms by (and at times two or more pass by without a care). There was actually an occasion where a truck accelerated as I was getting closer to his lane. What makes this even more ironic is that on both sides of the street is a big sign that tells drivers to yield.

Crosswalks are not schools zones. There are no time limits or crossing guards, so please put down the cell phone, slow down, and stop for pedestrians. I’m sure you would want someone to do the same for you if you were crossing the street.

Under Georgia law, motorists must stop when a pedestrian is in a crosswalk even if they are not in your lane.
